Hayden boys basketball caps off big week with win

— The Hayden boys basketball team was a little too hot a little too often Saturday for Paonia, winning a nearly defenseless game to take a big step toward locking up the league title and the No. 1 seed in the district tournament.

Hayden's Graig Medvesk was electric with 28 points as the Tigers passed the Eagles, 77-65.

"With the week we had, we're very pleased with this win," Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. "We're pleased with where we're at. I predicted the league champion would have a couple losses, and I'm pleased now that the one in first doesn't have those."

Hayden, 13-1, still has three league games remaining, but already trounced two of those teams — Soroco, 59-44, and West Grand, 67-44 — and should be a huge favorite against one-win Vail Mountain.

Saturday's win wrapped up a tough week for the Tigers as they picked up wins against three of the Western Slope's best squads.

They finished that streak with a flourish, outpacing Paonia in the fourth quarter to cap an offense-filled game.

Tigers sophomore Mark Doolin stood out, scoring 17 points. So did Hayden senior Ben Williams, who poured in 14, most coming on fast breaks against an ill-fated Paonia press.

Paonia's Adrian Penny was good, as well, nailing three consecutive 3-point shots in the third quarter to finish with a team-high 16 points.

None could match a highlight-reel night from Medvesk, however.

He hit five 3-point shots, all in the second half, and scored 11 in one span, lifting the Tigers from their only deficit of the game and helping establish the comfortable lead the game ended with.

Paonia kept it close throughout and went ahead, 38-37, early in the third. Hayden put together a 14-4 run to retake the lead, however.
