Hayden approves higher parking fines at Yampa Valley Regional Airport

— Starting next month, drivers who park illegally at the Yampa Valley Regional Airport will be facing significantly higher ticket prices.

The Hayden Town Council on Thursday approved the second reading of an ordinance that raises most citation prices at the airport from $20 to $85. Parking illegally in a handicapped zone or a crosswalk will result in higher fines of $200 and $100 per infraction, respectively.

Hayden Mayor Pro-Tem Lorraine Johnson said Sunday that the increased fines would help deter drivers from leaving their cars unattended at the curb in front of the terminal building in violation of federal regulations.

"It's still going to be a shock to some people," Johnson said about the fines. "But after the learning curve goes through, then people will start understanding the seriousness of this problem."

Johnson and other council members have said the increased fines are aimed at bringing drivers into compliance with federal security guidelines put in place at airports across the country after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The ordinance first was drafted last month after YVRA manager Dave Ruppel and Hayden Police Chief Gordon Booco said illegal parking had become a problem.

Booco conducted a survey of other mountain resort airports across the state that showed Hayden's airport charged less than most of its neighbors for parking infractions.

Also at Thursday's meeting, the Town Council gave final approval to a logo branding the town as the "Heart of the Yampa Valley."

Hayden Economic Development Commission Chairman Stef Nijsten said the logo would be used in conjunction with a new website to better market the town. He said Sunday he will be meeting with a class of students at Hayden High School this week who will help design and post news to the website's school news section.

He said after the website goes live in a couple of weeks, the town's rebranding efforts will continue Nov. 15 when the commission, the Chamber of Commerce, town staff, the Hayden School District and representatives from the airport meet to discuss marketing and rebranding efforts.

"We'll be talking about how we can retain businesses, and what we can do to attract more people to our community," Nijsten said.
