Steamboat Springs — Everything will be different in the game today for the Hayden boys basketball team.
A loss would end the season.
The mantra, though, remains the same.
"We need to keep our turnovers down and clear the boards," Hayden coach Mike Luppes said.
The Tigers open what they hope is a long postseason run at 2:30 p.m. today at home against Vail Christian.
The first time the teams met, Vail Christian led at the half. A huge game from Hayden's Graig Medvesk helped save the Tigers. He scored 33 points.
"We probably can't count on that again," Luppes said. "Vail Christian will be ready for this. They played us as good as anyone in the league except Meeker. They're thinking, 'We can beat Hayden.'
"We need to play with balance. We know we can come out and play well and be consistent. We have to be focused."
All four basketball teams from Hayden and Soroco open postseason play today. A loss, and the season is over. A win, though, ensures at least three more games. Two would come next weekend at the district basketball tournament in Rangely and the third a week later in the final tournament that will set the eight-team state tournament bracket.
The Hayden girls open up at home against West Grand at 1 p.m. before the boys play Vail Christian. The Soroco boys, meanwhile, play at 1 p.m. at home against Plateau Valley, and the girls will travel to Meeker for a 1 p.m. game.
"We're playing better," said Soroco girls coach David Bruner, looking for an upset from his young squad. "We are still a young team, but we're starting to grow up a little bit, and I feel like we have a really good chance."
