Hayden airport restaurant has strong 1st month

With Three Wire eatery, YVRA’s food and beverage revenue for December is highest since 2007

— Despite getting a late start last month because of a water leak, Yampa Valley Regional Airport's new Three Wire Bar and Grill nearly posted record revenue in December.

Doris Mayhan, the airport's business manager, said Monday that the new restaurant and snack bar did $54,236 in total sales in its first month of business. She said the airport posted its highest restaurant revenue for December in 2007, when it made $60,163. In December 2010, the airport restaurant and snack bar took in just $18,219.

"Last month's total puts the restaurant and snack bar revenue at the second highest (for December) in the history of food and beverage service at the airport," Mayhan said. "It's a pretty phenomenal total for us running our own restaurant for the first year. It shows that in past years there were some missed business opportunities for the restaurant, which we were able to recapture with a better location, better service and better products."

Tami Fricault, general manager of Three Wire Bar and Grill, said sales were strong at the new restaurant in its inaugural month, but she is still hoping to break records. Entering her second full month of business in the terminal building, Fricault said she hopes to expand the restaurant's closing hour from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to serve dinner and attract more locals. The bar, which currently is open from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, already has been staying open later and offers specials on weekends during NFL playoff games.

"I'm a very competitive person and I always want to do more," Fricault said Monday. "But I think our sales were good, especially after all that we went through with the water leak we had."

The restaurateur said Three Wire's most popular dishes so far include the Asian pulled pork and buffalo jalapeno brats, and the venue is currently on pace to surpass the airport's January 2010 food and beverage revenue.

Fricault said Three Wire offers a 10 percent discount to Hayden residents and a 20 percent discount to county employees. The restaurant was finished late last year as part of the final phase of improvements at YVRA. The county chose to operate the restaurant itself after it received no interest from the private sector.

Hayden sales taxes

Meanwhile, the town of Hayden continues to draw a significant amount of its sales tax revenues from the airport and is on track to surpass its total 2010 collections by more than $50,000.

"We believe that because of last winter's heavy snowfall, we got heavy revenue from the airport at the beginning of 2011," Hayden Finance Director Lisa Dowling said about the increase in 2011 collections.

Collections were down 11 percent in November 2011, the latest collection figures available, compared to the previous year because a number of significant vendors did not file their taxes, Dowling said. She added that she expects that revenue to be filed and show up next month.
