Gordy and Betty Steele

Gordy and Betty Steele of Anaconda, Mont., recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. They were wed April 16, 1955, at Central Christian Church in Lebanon, Ind.

They raised their family in Oak Creek. Their children are Marcia Slosson (Hank) of Anaconda; Toby Steele of Fort Lupton; and Angie Butterworth (Steve) of Aurora. They have one grandchild, Leah Landes, a freshman at Pomona College in California.

The Steele family owned the Apex coal mine near Oak Creek for many years. Then, Gordy worked for Empire Energy in Craig as a supervisor until retirement in 1992.

Betty was a foster mom and worked as an aide in special education in Yampa and Craig and as a “go-fer” for Empire Energy in Craig.

After retirement, they had a peach orchard in Palisade, then lived in Grand Junction until moving to Anaconda to be near their grandchild.

A banquet celebrating their marriage was held April 9 at Fairmont Resort near Anaconda.
