Get ready for Tour de Steamboat road bicycling event with training tips

Tom Ross

— The 10th Annual Tour de Steamboat road bicycling ride and fundraiser is just more than a month away, and organizer Kent Eriksen, of Eriksen Cycles, has training tips for people aspiring to the full 110-mile ride or one of the shorter options.

“Whether you are already able to ride 100 miles or you have a long way to go, keep a log or riding diary,” Eriksen wrote on the event’s website. “This will help start your training and stay on track with your goals. It can be as simple as a spreadsheet or one of a variety of training diaries available that track info, like route, speed, temperature, moods and heart rate.

“If you currently ride less than 100 miles per week, increase that mileage gradually in the weeks prior to the event, trying to ride at least 30 miles during the week, and 70 on the weekend. Commuting to work or lunchtime rides can help you meet that midweek mileage goal.”

The century-plus ride in the Tour de Steamboat takes in Rabbit Ears and Gore passes before returning to Steamboat Springs. However, there are shorter rides, including the 40-mile Stagecoach out and back. New this year is the Sidney Peak Ranch ride of 9-plus miles, taking in scenic Routt County Road 14/River Road and a cruise through private Sidney Peak Ranch.

All rides start at 7 a.m. at 12th and Yampa streets in downtown Steamboat and end there as well. All of the details are available at http://www.tourdesteamboat.com.

This year’s presenting sponsor is Wells Fargo, and proceeds benefit Routt County Riders, Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide, Partners in Routt County and the Yampa Valley Sustainabiity Council.
