Organizers of a local Toys for Tots drive say more donations are needed to help young children and teenagers have a happier holiday.
Gary and Teri Wall, of the Home Builders Association of Steamboat Springs, have set up shop in Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library, where they will accept donations of unused, unwrapped toys from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday. Routt County United Way also is organizing the local toy drive. Although several long tables and the floor at Library Hall are filled with piles of soccer balls, basketballs, toy trucks, books, portable music players and more, Gary Wall said the amount of requests for aid this year means more help is needed.
"We have 98 children signed up, and we're expecting probably that many more," Wall said, meaning a total of nearly 200 area children could receive Toys for Tots gifts this year.
He added that gifts for teenagers could include video games, DVDs and portable music players.
"People tend to forget about teenagers when they think about Toys for Tots," Gary Wall said, adding that options are wide open for teen gifts. "Think about what you wanted when you were a teenager."
Teri Wall said Monday that they are running low on items for girls, as well. She said people who want to donate money can make out checks or money orders to "Toys for Tots." Donations also can be made online at http://www.toysfortots.org.
Gary Wall said he hopes to make the Toys for Tots collection drive an annual holiday-season event for the local Home Builders Association chapter.
"I figure, we build houses, and as an organization we should help build homes," Gary Wall said. "It's been fun."
