Garfield County fires send smoke into Routt County

— Two fires in Garfield County are sending smoke into the area, but there are no active fires in Routt County.

Numerous residents in the Hayden area have reported the smoke to Routt County Communications.

Satellite imagery showed the smoke plume from the fires headed toward Routt County.

The fires burning north of Rifle are the Brush Creek Fire and the Ward Gulch Fire.

The Brush Creek Fire was reported at 4 p.m. Thursday about 12 miles north of Rifle on Bureau of Land Management land. Lightning started the fire that has burned 300 acres. There are 60 firefighters at the blaze. No structures currently are threatened.

The Ward Gulch Fire was reported June 14 three miles north of Rifle Gap Reservoir. It has burned 485 acres and is 100 percent contained. Firefighters are mopping up the fire, but smoke still might be visible.
