Fresh snow in Steamboat’s forecast

— Skiers at the Steamboat Ski Area should wake up to some spring powder Tuesday morning, but the remainder of the week promises to be drier with continuing mild afternoon temperatures.

Steamboat Springs-based meteorologist Mike Weissbluth of says the newest snow producer will be another storm affected by that pesky vortex up north.

"A splitting storm very similar to the one on Friday, but cooler, affects our area beginning around midnight (Monday). Moderate snows are likely as the front barrels across the region very early Tuesday morning, with 2-4" expected by report time," Weissbluth predicted at midday Monday.

"But the system splits around us as a wave traveling around the ever-present-for-this-winter Hudson Bay vortex drags a piece of the storm across the Continental Divide while leaving the remaining piece to meander westward to Utah and eventually Nevada. I would expect another 2-4" during the day."

Weissbluth said earlier forecast models anticipated more moisture for Steamboat by Friday, but he now foresees a drier trend taking hold before next week. That's when more Pacific energy will interact with the west coast ridge of high pressure.

The National Weather Service was forecasting highs in the upper 30s during most of this work week before the high 40s return under sunny skies Friday through Sunday.
