Epicurean reopens with a new feel

— The Epicurean deli has been closed, but owner Marco Pauvert says he and his wife, Rebecca, are reopening Tuesday.

This time, the Frenchman said he is shifting the focus of the business to being more of a French bistro.

“It’s the old-fashioned French cooking,” Pauvert said. “People said, why don’t you do a fine bistro, so I decided to,” Pauvert said.

Local organic meat, gourmet soups, cheeses and fresh organic greens will still be sold, but when the Epicurean Cafe reopens, it will offer more of a French atmosphere and an á la carte menu. Pauvert said they have spent the past few weeks remodeling the space and there is more than twice as much seating as before.

Pauvert will manage the front of the restaurant, and his wife will be the head chef.

The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The menu will include eight types of soup, including lobster bisque and French Onion.

Six appetizers will be offered including mixed greens and artichoke and cheese dip.

The entree menu will include 16 to 18 items, including cassoulet, a white bean, duck and lamb dish. Coqoau will also be prepared. The dish is made with rooster cooked with wine sauce for 12 hours.

This will be Pauvert’s second attempt at a bistro. He opened the French Bistro in Ski Time Square in January 2002, but the location wasn’t right. In late 2004, he opened The Epicurean at 825 Oak St.

“It’s a good niche because we are not on Lincoln Avenue,” Pauvert said. “When you eat outside, you feel relaxed.”

Free wine and beer will be served with meals when the bistro opens Tuesday.
