Freeskiers unlock big results at Keystone

— It didn't start during the weekend for Cael McCarthy. It started months ago. It came together on the weekend, however.

McCarthy, a freestyle skier with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, hit a run he's been perfecting all year and that propelled him onto the podium in the Menehune boys class at a USASA Slopestyle Competition at Keystone Resort.

McCarthy helped lead the way for Steamboat's freeskiing team with a big second-place finish.

Another top finish came from Josie Seibel, who won the junior womens class.

The team got one more win, from Riley Jacobs, who placed first in the Breaker girls division.

Other top finishers included Wiley Wagner, 11th in Menehune boys; Blake Clemente 11th, Will Gossman 12th, Logan Spiegle 13th, Owen Taylor 14th and Silas Leeson 16th in Breaker boys; and Kai Doyle fifth, Liam Baxter seventh and Alex Spiegle 12th in youth men.

Next up for the team is a trip to Breckenridge for its last rail jam, slopestyle and halfpipe competitions of the season. Skiers will be aiming to qualify for nationals, set for early next month in Copper Mountain.
