Four longtime Steamboat artists to showcase work at the Depot Art Center

The Depot Art Center's exhibit "Patterns of the West" features longtime local artists Wendy Kowynia, Barb Sanders, Bill Sanders and Lance Whitner.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Unified by a theme of patterns, four longtime Steamboat Springs artists were back in the Depot Art Center this month for a reunion exhibit.

Artists Wendy Kowynia, Barb Sanders, Bill Sanders and Lance Whitner created new works in fiber, photogravure, clay and paint, each piece encompassing their collective theme.

Patterns of the West, this month's featured exhibit at the Depot Art Center, will have a meet-and-greet with the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

“The four of us showed together in the Circle Seven gallery on Lincoln Avenue for many years,” said Kowynia said. “It is a wonderful homecoming for us to be showing together again. The theme of pattern is a pervasive influence in all our works.”

"It's interesting to see how we were each inspired by pattern and express it in four different ways in four different mediums," added Whitner.

Kowynia explained Bill Sanders’ works of ceramic horses, scored in fluent swirls, relates to the trundling hillsides in Whitner's work. In addition, Barb Sanders’ compositions of shadows, featuring trees and fences, relate to the horizontal and vertical elements of Kowynia's gesso-stiffened textiles.

“There is a richness and a synchronicity that happens in a well-curated show; the works play off of each other, enhance each other, illuminate each other,” Kowynia said. “Our only act of curating was in bringing the four of us together. We knew that our works would play off of each other in an interesting and beautiful way.”
