For sale: Slightly used chairs from Steamboat’s former Storm Peak lift

Skiers make their way up the Storm Peak Express in 2015. The chairs shown here replaced the ones put up for sale Monday morning.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Want to buy a little piece of Steamboat history, well Loryn Kasten, senior communications manager for Steamboat Ski Area, has a little bit of advice.

“They will go quickly, so if you want one you should be waiting by the phone and ready to call,” Kasten said about reserving one of a limited number of chairs from the original Storm Peak Lift that the ski area will be putting up for sale.

Individuals who wish to purchase a chair for $250 should call 970-871-5237 starting at 9 a.m. Monday to reserve one. She said it will do no good to call in early.

The ski area will have staff members manning multiple phone lines, and she expects the process for reservaing chairs to move quickly.

“These chairs are a really sought-after entity,” Kasten said. “The last time we did it was in  2007, so it’s not that common to put chairs up for sale.”

Kasten said callers can simply reserve the right to purchase one of the chairs. Chairs are limited to one per person and are sold in an “as-is” condition.

Those who reserve a chair will need to stop by the Meadows Parking Lot between 2 and 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 or from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 to pick up their chairs. Those purchasing chairs should be ready to pay with either a check or cash. Credit cards will not be accepted.

Steamboat Ski Area employees will be on hand to assist with loading the chairs, but buyers should be prepared to haul their chair with their own truck or large vehicle.

Buyers will be awarded the next chair available at pickup. Kasten said chairs will be brought to the parking lot in a random order, and arriving early in hopes of getting the No. 1 chair is not advised.

In fact, Kasten said can’t even say how many of the 100 chairs will be available because employees of the ski area got the first shot before the public was offered the chance. Monday’s sale will be for the remaining chairs.

“These chairs have fulfilled their duty whisking guests up the mountain,” said Deb Werner, lift operations director of the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. “Offering retired chairs for the public to purchase is a great way for the lift’s legacy to carry on, and the resort to raise funds to put directly back in the community.”

Proceeds from the sale of the chairs will be used to generate funds for the resort’s grants program through the Yampa Valley Community Foundation.

The retired chairs were part of the original Storm Peak Lift installed in 1983.

In 1992, when Storm Peak Express was installed in its current location, the previous Storm Peak triple chair was renamed Four Points Lift. The Four Points chairs were retired in 2012 when new chairs were installed on the current Four Points Lift.
