Fletcher, Demong crack top 10 at World Cup

Bryan Fletcher

— It was another strong performance for Bryan Fletcher on Sunday, the Steamboat Springs-born Nordic combined skier tallying his second consecutive individual top 10 finish at the Nordic combined World Cup.

Fletcher skied to seventh place in the fourth individual World Cup event of the season, finishing 9.9 seconds behind Germany’s Eric Frenzel, who won an event for the third time this season.

Billy Demong was right on Fletcher’s ski tips, finishing ninth, only 0.7 seconds further back. Todd Lodwick finished 33rd a day after joining Fletcher in a relay race to finish fourth.

The race once again showed off the U.S. team’s cross-country skiing aptitude. Fletcher came from deep in the pack, 30th place, for his finish. He started 1 minute, 9 seconds after the day’s leading jumper, Haavard Klemetsen, and ended up finishing the race only 4.4 seconds behind the Norwegian.

Fletcher had the day’s second-fastest skiing time.

Demong started in 16th and had the eighth-fastest time. Lodwick, too, moved up, from 40th.

“Our cross-country skiing is right on par with where I want it to be,” Fletcher said after Saturday’s relay competition.

He said the team’s jumping still is “coming around.”

Taylor Fletcher established himself as one of the circuit’s fastest skiers last season, and proved Saturday that he hasn’t lost anything as he recorded the fastest individual time in the two-man relay event. For the third time in four individual events this season, however, he didn’t jump well enough to start Sunday’s ski race.

“We still have kinks to work out but each comp we are improving and that’s what matters,” Bryan Fletcher said. Saturday’s “event was just another reminder of how close we are and confirmation that we are moving on the right track.”
