Red Park Fire grows to 50 acres in North Routt County

A lightning-sparked fire in North Routt County has burned an estimated 50 acres in an area of the Routt National Forest known as Big Red Park.

The fire was originally reported Aug. 19.

The fire, named Big Red, has grown in recent days with dry, warm weather and winds out of the north. Recently, the fire jumped over Forest Service Road 500 1B.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Aaron Voos said there are no assets immediately at risk, and it has been difficult to gauge the size because of smoke.

There is private land to the south and timber sales in the forest.

It is burning in beetle-killed lodgepole pine trees, spruce and fir.

Voos said it is too dangerous for firefighters to attack the fire directly from the ground. About 50 people are working at the fire.

The Forest Service was considering closures for the area Monday.
