Excel Gymnastics to send 6 headed to state
December 3, 2010
Steamboat Springs — Excel Gymnastics had six girls qualify for the state gymnastic championships during the next two weekends.
Emma Cooke and Alyssa Groves will compete in the Level 5 Girls Gymnastics State Championships at Premier Gymnastics in Denver on Saturday and Sunday.
The next weekend, Annika Fahrner, Sydney Shelton, Isabella McCarble and Maddie Craigen will compete in the Level 4 Girls Gymnastics State Championships at the University of Denver.
Gymnastics begin at Level 1 and go to Level 10.
The girls going to state often practiced two, three or four days a week after school for as many as three hours a day. To qualify for the state competition, gymnasts had to score a 33 or better on their all-around score. The all-around score is a combination of the vault, bars, beam and floor exercises.
Coach Steve Murray said he was pleased. He said he would like to see several girls get into the top 10 and improve overall on their scores.
"The girls worked very hard and put in a lot of time," he said. "They worked just as hard as any athlete out there. I'm glad to see them get some recognition."
