Steamboat Springs — An employee who had just completed his first two-hour shift at a new job is suspected of illegally going back into the gas station when it was closed and stealing $85 from two donation boxes.
Jeffrey Kiowa Bongiorno, 28, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony second- and third-degree burglary and theft. His bond was set at $10,000 on Thursday, and he is due back in court at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Bongiorno had just been hired at the Shop & Hop south of Steamboat Springs city limits along U.S. Highway 40 and was being trained by an employee Tuesday night.
According to an arrest affidavit, the employee training Bongiorno thinks Bongiorno unlocked the door while they were closing, and then Bongiorno went back into the business. The affidavit states surveillance video shows that once inside the business, Bongiorno handled two donation boxes. The boxes later were found to be empty.
The business's manager reported $65 was in an Animal Assistance donation box and $20 was in a Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation donation box.
