E. coli closes beach again at Steamboat Lake

Pilot & Today Staff

— Steamboat Lake's E. coli levels exceeded 235 organisms per 100 milliliters again, closing the park's swim beach, Steamboat Lake State Park Ranger Matthew Schuler said today.

He said in an e-mail that the test was taken on a day when high winds were blowing into the beach, concentrating particles in the area. Schuler said he expects that is the cause of the high levels of E. coli. Park employees have retested the water and hope to reopen the beach as early as Thursday, he said.

Steamboat Lake State Park had to close the beach in June for a couple of days because of elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. The park in North Routt County tests the water weekly for E. coli.
