Downed trees cause power outages in Routt County

Pilot & Today Staff

— Yampa Valley Electric Association crews were scrambling Wednesday night to address power outages because of trees hitting power lines as high winds struck the area.

YVEA spokesman Jim Chappell said there were outages south of Steamboat Springs because of a tree hitting a line somewhere near Colorado Highway 131.

Another tree had hit power lines north of Steamboat Springs Airport near Elk River Estates, Chappell said.

“We’re trying to get crews assembled right now,” he said just after 10 p.m.

Chappell said he did not know how many people were affected by the outages.

Another line was reported down on Routt County Road 14 earlier Wednesday evening, which resulted in temporary closure of the road, according to information that came through Routt County Communications over the police scanner.
