— Give a guy like Bill Demong a lead like he got Thursday, and nothing short of a snowmobile is likely to change things.

Demong, a member of the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team moonlighting at the Continental Cup’s three-event stay at Soldier Hollow, Utah, dominated the final day of competition and earned his second win and third podium in the three days.

He soared like a kite on his jump, earning him a 40-second lead in the ensuing cross-country ski race. He easily held on there, winning by 23 seconds.

“I really invested a lot of time and effort this summer into jumping and have a very stable platform. The potential is much higher this year,” he said in a U.S. Ski Team news release.

Thursday’s win goes with his win Tuesday and a second-place finish Wednesday. He said the results were good for him, especially as he looks ahead to February’s Olympics.

“I’m just going to keep building,” he said. “Things are falling into place with 50 days to go.”

The results were good for the team, too. The Continental Cup success earned the United States a fifth spot on the World Cup circuit, meaning all four regular U.S. A-team members will get to compete as well as one other skier. That should help sort things out when it comes time to divvy up those Olympic spots.

“Bill did what Bill came home to do,” coach Greg Poirier said.

Other U.S. skiers had strong days, as well. Adam Loomis gained eight spots in the ski portion to finish 20th overall while Nick Hendrickson jumped to 31st place and skied up to 21st. Michael Ward gained even more, moving from 39th to 25th. Ben Berend was 31st, Aleck Gantick was 34th, Erik Lynch was 36th and Nicholas Madden was 45th.
