December sales tax collections for Steamboat Springs take hit

— December sales tax collections in the city of Steamboat Springs were down more than 5 percent compared with the same month in 2011, according to a report released Wednesday by the city.

December marked the fourth month of decreased collections in 2012 — including March (-1.2), September (-0.7) and November (-0.4) — and saw the largest disparity by far at 5.3 percent.

The decline in collections was contributed to by nearly all sales tax categories with the exception of sporting goods, which saw an increase of 6.5 percent. Lodging and amenities saw the largest decrease at more than 11 percent, followed by utilities (-11 percent), restaurants (-7 percent), miscellaneous retail (-4 percent) and liquor stores (-1 percent).

Every sales tax area also saw decreases in collections compared with 2011, including regional and base area (both -8 percent), downtown and U.S. Highway 40 corridor (both -4 percent) and west Steamboat (-2 percent).

Despite the rough December, year-to-date sales tax collections reached $17,586,036, which is an increase of about 1 percent, or $200,000, compared with 2011.

In other sales tax categories, building-use tax collections were up 636 percent in December compared with 2011, when the city posted a net loss of $297,985 as a result of use tax reconciliation payment. The city's 2012 total building-use tax collections are $556,177, a 7.58 percent increase from 2011's $516,982 despite only four months seeing increases from the previous year.

Accommodation tax collections were down nearly 11 percent in December compared with the previous year, putting year-to-date collections at $645,847, which is down more than 1 percent from 2011 for a difference of nearly $10,000.

The air service tax collected 138,396 in December for a year-to-date total of $1,047,034. The tax was not collected in 2011.
