Dave Nagel: 4 Yellow forever
December 3, 2013
It was a great three-year run. A total of $300,000 into the community for cancer support services. It took a community.
I went back and looked at the numbers. We had 56 local sponsors, 340 volunteers, 34 committee members, 12 granting committee members, 500 participants and six events (three Ski 4 Yellow and three Ride 4 Yellow). A tremendous run. And as the saying goes, all good things must come to end.
The 4 Yellow Foundation is moving on. Our volunteer committee members have returned to their family and business lives. However, 4 Yellow is forever.
Because of the great work of other local charitable organizations, the Ski 4 Yellow format will be transitioned to Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports. It will be taking its own spin on the ski event and has announced the STARS Mountain Challenge scheduled for March 29. STARS has set out to make the event a national spotlight for adaptive skiers. We are honored to be part of this transition and wish all at STARS well in their endeavors.
Additionally, the 4 Yellow endowment fund will live on. With $100,000-plus in principal, each year, the Yampa Valley Community Foundation will grant funds for local cancer support services into the future. The endowment also will continue to operate and receive donations, with a goal to establish a
$1 million base for local granting indefinitely.
The Ride 4 Yellow? Maybe another charity in town can take the format and platform to support their own causes. Or at the right time, perhaps it will be resurrected.
To all of you, thank you for embracing the "4" causes throughout the years. It has been inspiring.
