Colorado State Patrol officials said no citations were issued

— The Colorado State Patrol released details Saturday about the bicycle crash that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old Vermont man.

The information shows that David Blumenthal was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash Wednesday morning.

Blumenthal, of Montpelier, Va., was riding south at about 8:20 a.m. on Routt County Road 62 in North Routt County, approaching a right-hand curve.

The bicycle moved to the northbound side of the road to avoid mud, according to the State Patrol release.

A 2007 Chevrolet pickup driven by 53-year-old Thomas Dover, of Steamboat Springs, was driving north on the road. The driver stopped the pickup in the road when he saw the cyclist approaching. The bicycle hit the left front of the pickup. Blumenthal was ejected and landed on the southbound shoulder, according to the release.

He was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then to St. Anthony’s Central in Denver where he died Friday from his injuries.

Dover was not injured, and Colorado State Sgt. Scott Elliott confirmed that no citations would be issued. The crash occurred on an unpaved road, and the weather was dry and sunny at the time, he said.

Blumenthal was riding with the Tour Divide bicycle race.
