Controlled burns planned in Routt National Forest

— Users of the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest may notice smoke in the coming weeks as fire crews burn piles of slash.

According to a news release, the burns will occur at Steamboat Ski Area and along Buffalo Pass Road, which is Forest Service Road 60. Burns might occur in other locations if weather permits.

“Forest users and the public should be aware that smoke from these burns will be visible and is expected,” the release states.

People with questions can visit the Steamboat Springs Forest Service office at 925 Weiss Drive or can call 970-870-2299.

The Forest Service plans to place signs on nearby roads to inform the public about the prescribed burns. No road closures are expected.

The objective of the burns is to remove dead fuels that remain as a result of logging to remove beetle-killed lodgepole pine trees.
