CMC to share construction plans at open house tonight

Alpine Campus to host open house to show off building plans

A three-dimensional model of the new Colorado Mountain College administrative and classroom building is on display at the library in Bristol Hall. The model also will be available for viewing at an open house tonight in the Willett Hall dining room.

— Colorado Mountain College officials will introduce plans for the proposed Alpine Campus administrative and classroom facility at an open house tonight.

Campus CEO Peter Perhac said the college is required to present detailed plans to the public, but that tonight also is an opportunity for the community to see what CMC envisions for its campus in Steamboat Springs.

"This is the first time that people will see what the building will look like and how it sits on the property," he said.

The open house is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Willett Hall dining room.

Perhac said community members can see a three-dimensional model, architect renderings and take a virtual tour of the building's interior. He said college officials and consultants working on the project, including the architect and engineer, will be available to answer questions.

And attendees even will be served a free dinner, courtesy of CMC.

CMC officials announced their intention to build a new building using geoexchange heating and cooling technology in fall 2009. The 60,000-square-foot building is scheduled to be at least silver certified through Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. In addition to offices and classroom spaces, the building will feature a one-stop shop for academic services, a 6,000-square-foot commercial kitchen for a new culinary program and a 250- to 290-seat auditorium.

In February, the college's board of trustees approved a construction budget not to exceed $22.9 million. It included $14.5 to construct the building and $2.9 million to build the Crawford Avenue Spur secondary access road, among other costs.

Perhac said staging for the new building, including bringing in fencing and equipment, is scheduled for April 15, weather permitting. He said Monson Hall is scheduled for demolition May 15. And Perhac said groundbreaking is scheduled for June 1, with completion anticipated by July 2012.
