Clutch home run helps Sailors to 2-0 on Saturday
April 5, 2014
The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team got strong pitching and timely offense Saturday to win a pair of games against Battle Mountain.
The Sailors got a seventh-inning walk-off, two-run home run from Billy Clark to save a brilliant pitching performance from Matt Regan and win the first game, 3-1.
Steamboat then exploded on offense to take the second, 14-3.
Regan struck out 12 and allowed just three hits and no walks in the first game, but the Sailors still were tied in the final inning. Clark changed that with a bomb over the center field fence, however.
"He cranked it pretty good," coach Rusty McRight said.
Steamboat didn't let things get so exciting in the second game. The Sailors opened the first inning with a triple and three doubles from their first four hitters. They never looked back. Jesse Pugh shut the Huskies down from the mound, striking out five, as Steamboat improved to 5-2.
The squad is back in action Thursday as it travels to play Eagle Valley in a weather-delayed game.
Saturday's games were played at Battle Mountain despite Steamboat being the home team. The schools were scheduled to meet in Craig, but weather there would have forced a cancelation so things moved down the highway to Battle Mountain.
