Club alpine racers place in slalom events

Winter Sports Club athletes land in top 10 in Crested Butte

— The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's Alpine Ability team recently returned from Crested Butte after competing in the Millenium Bank Colorado Junior Ski Cup, the first of three qualifiers for J2 Nationals for skiers 15 and 16 years old. The Crested Butte event had of two slalom races Saturday and Sunday.

Winter Sports Club athletes performed well throughout the weekend.

In Saturday's women's slalom, Aspen's Katie Ryan won with a time of 1:21:09. Steamboat's Annie Ochs finished third overall, and second among the J2's, with a time of 1:21:33. Ochs put together two solid runs on her former home hill in Crested Butte.

Other local finishers included Ciar Colgan in sixth; Cassady Daley in 10th; Katie Hostetler in 13th; Vreni Lupear in 14th; Hannah Watt-Sax in 17th; Olivia Rudolph in 20th; Megan Rosa in 32nd; and Rachel Grubbs in 38th.

The men's slalom race Sat­urday was won by Connor Mc­Don­ald, from Team Summit, in 1:27:96. Steam­boat's Nick Veth was seventh overall, and second among the J2's. Cody Johns was 14th overall and fourth for J2's; Nick Mitchell was 15th overall and fifth for J2's; and Andreas Foulk was 29th.

Aspen's Ryan also won Sun­day's women's slalom in 1:17:15. Ochs was third overall and second among J2's for the second straight day. Natalie Pearl finished fourth with a time of 1:19:27; Hostetler was ninth overall and fourth for J2's; Ali Pougiales finished 11th overall and sixth for J2's; Lupear was 14th overall and ninth for J2's; Suzanne Lyon was 16th overall and 10th for J2's; Watt-Sax was 20th overall; Rudolph was 29th; Grubbs was 34th; and Rosa was 35th. Pougiales won the second run after placing 22nd on her first run.

Team Summit's McDonald topped the men's second slalom race Sunday with a time of 1:34:78. Steamboat's Brant Cros­san finished fourth with a time of 1:36:80; and Tyler Theis ended up fifth overall and was first in the J2 class with a time of 1:36:95. Connor Bernard was ninth; Veth was 10th overall and second for J2's; Erik Petersen finished 12th overall after he had the fastest second run of the day for the men; Mitchell was 16th overall and fourth for J2's; and Johns finished 23rd overall and sixth for J2's.

During the course of the two-day event, Steamboat had five athletes in the top 15 racers in three of the four races. The Winter Sports Club took 15 top 10's in the J2 age group.
