A community send-off for the Sailors football and cheerleading teams is planned for noon today. People are asked to line Maple and Third streets to show their support as the two teams head to their state competitions.
Steamboat Springs — The Sailors cheerleading squad hopes to perfect Saturday a routine that began to take shape well before the start of the 2009-10 school year.
The team is performing at the state cheerleading championships at 6:08 p.m. Saturday at the Denver Coliseum. The late start allows the team to also cheer at Saturday's Class 3A state championship football game between Steamboat Springs and Valor Christian.
"Our coach told us we'll have like three minutes to congratulate the team after the game," senior captain Genna Bradley said.
Although the team will pull double duty Saturday, the Sailors sound confident going in.
With a routine they've worked to perfect since the beginning of the year, Bradley said the goal Saturday isn't to get a specific place. Rather, it's to execute a smooth and crowd-pleasing routine.
"We want to hit all our stunts clean and don't let them drop," Bradley said. "If we do that, the potential of our routine will take us to our place."
The team won the regional title in November in Denver. There, the team was judged and placed in the medium varsity division based solely on the number of cheerleaders on the team.
It'll be tough to judge where Steamboat stands prior to Saturday because teams will be judged based on the number of students enrolled at their school, not the number of cheerleaders on the squad.
Steamboat will compete in Class 4A at the state meet.
"I think we're going to go out there and give everything with this routine," senior Charlotte Letson said. "We've worked on it and done it so many times. We started chipping away at it earlier in the season, and we've just kept adding things on."
The routine will be the same one the team did at the regional competition.
This year's team includes nine seniors: Alisha Repollo, Alexandra Wetzler, Brittany Salazar, Letson, Bradley, Hannah Ramirez, Skyler Barry, Journee Heinert and Lyndsey Chea.
Juniors are Catherine Fischer, Kaitlin McBride, Emma Lichtenfels, Erin Duran, Kate Rusk and Kendall Yeager. Sophomores are Brittani Beckwith, Brandi Salazar, Sydney Finkbohner, Mary Mullen, Linnea Franke and Hadlie Quick.
