Changes underway to Tour de Steamboat fundraising ride

— The ever-popular Eriksen Tour de Steamboat bike ride will have the same look this summer, but with one notable exception. The money raised during the event now will stay in Routt County.

Ride director Katie Lindquist said organizers decided to step away from using the money to help The Sunshine Kids and instead will use the proceeds to benefit four local organizations.

Routt County Riders, Partners in Routt County, Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide and the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council will split the proceeds from the ride for the next three years.

"It's just keeping it local," Lindquist said. "The economy hit our town and all these organizations depend on this. We have an amazing town, and to keep it that way, we need to keep our social organizations going."

The event features three rides. There is a 110-mile option, a 40-mile out and back to Stagecoach and a 26-mile ride to Sidney Peak Ranch and back. The event begins at 7 a.m. July 20. Registration is open and is available by clicking here.

"It's awesome," said Sarah Jones, executive director for the Sustainability Council. "They really chose from each area of support in our community. It was such a great job of choosing nonprofits that touch on each area of our community."

There also will be a benefit dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. July 19 at The Steamboat Grand. Tickets are $30. A silent auction will take place at the dinner. There will be 100 $100 tickets available for purchase, with each ticket guaranteeing a bottle of wine valued at between $20 and $100. One winner will be chosen for an international trip, as well. Tickets are available at all of the nonprofit beneficiaries.

The Tour de Steamboat has been a popular event. Last year's ride attracted more than 700 participants and raised more than $75,000.

Lindquist said the goal is to get to 1,000 riders this year and to raise as much money as possible. She hopes each nonprofit could receive about $20,000.

"Oh my gosh, with our budget, $20,000 would provide opportunites for so many more youth in the community," said Nathan Allen, a development assistant with Partners in Routt County. "It would provide the opportunity for more programming for more of these youth."

Lindquist said Tour de Steamboat organizers also are looking for business sponsorships. Wells Fargo Bank takes over as the title sponsor this year, and Lindquist said Victory Lane sponsors are needed. Sponsorships are available for a minimum donation of $100.

"If we get 100, that's $10,000," Lindquist said.
