Challenge Fund grants presented to Steamboat Springs School Board
November 9, 2014
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs School Board is expected to approve 29 Challenge Fund grants awarded this year for field trips, supplies and programs at Strawberry Park and Soda Creek elementary schools during a board meeting Monday night.
The meeting is open to the public and begins at 5:30 p.m. in the George P. Sauer Human Services Center at 325 Seventh St.
Formed in January 2012, the Challenge Fund gathers donations from local parents and community members and then accepts grant applications from teachers for initiatives at the two elementary schools.
In its first year, about $52,000 was raised and then distributed for use during the 2012-13 school year. This year about $44,000 will be distributed to Soda Creek and Strawberry Park for things like science kits, a community mapping project and the 2015 Battle of the Books.
Also at Monday's meeting, the board will hold a discussion on the collaborative bargaining team negotiations. The board recently voted to make negotiations public and last week’s passing of Proposition 104 made the meetings public statewide. The proposition passed with 70 percent of the vote.
The board also will discuss its policy on electronic participation at School Board meetings. The policy allows for board members to participate electronically in meetings under extenuating circumstances, including when a job causes the member to be out of the area or when weather or unsafe driving conditions prevent the board member from attending in person.
Board Chair Roger Good wrote a letter to the rest of the board questioning whether the policy needs to be updated and if it is being accurately followed.
"I have a few concerns with our practice versus the policy written," Good said in the letter.
Two board members have participated in meetings via telephone since the beginning of 2014.
The board will hold a discussion to debrief after a leadership training held during their most recent board workshop on Oct. 27.
The board contracted with Steve Muntean, of the Muntean Leadership Group, for the training.
