Brent Boyer: Last call for Locals
April 21, 2011
Steamboat Springs — Everyone has a story worth telling.
I think it was Doug Cosper, my Reporting 1 professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, who told me that. It's an oft-cited turn of phrase for journalists, as it should be. Spend a bit of time with anyone and you're sure to learn something interesting and worth sharing with others.
Cosper's words stuck with me, and I'm reminded of them every spring as we prepare another edition of Locals, our annual collection of profiles of Routt County residents.
My own Locals assignments throughout the years have given me the great pleasure of getting to know some fascinating residents, people such as Bill McKelvie, Tom Sharp, Dave Schmid, Steve Dawes, the late Kathy Main, Bill Bowes and Steve and Denise Hitchcock.
It's been more than 15 years since the Steamboat Pilot & Today first began publishing an annual Locals section. In that time, we've written about hundreds of Routt County residents, some of them newsmakers already, many of them not. And perhaps that's what I most enjoy about Locals — the chance to learn about someone whose face I may know from the grocery store aisles or their place of employment, but whose other ties to the community may be less visible.
The deadline to turn in nominations for the 2011 edition of Locals was last week, but I hate the thought of not compiling as extensive a list as we can from which to choose this year's profiles. If you know someone the community ought to get to know, too, please email the nominee's name and contact information to Eugene Buchanan at ebuchanan@SteamboatToday.com. Include the reason for your nomination as well as your contact information.
Locals will be published as part of the summer edition of At Home in Steamboat Springs magazine, scheduled to hit newsstands July 1.
