UPDATED: Firefighters battling house fire south of Steamboat Springs

Firefighters are still working to extinguish a blaze at a home at 27841 Whitecotton Lane in a rural neighborhood south of Steamboat Springs.

Neighbor Sid Hopkins said the fire appeared to have started on the deck of the residence, and nobody was home when the blaze began.

Other neighbors rushed to the home and turned off the electricity and a propane tank at the residence, Hopkins said.

“We were just out in the front yard of our place getting ready to go to Denver when we looked over there, and the flames were shooting up like crazy,” Hopkins said. “The deck was all aflame.”

Hopkins said the flames rose 15 feet high when the fire initially started sometime around 1 p.m.

At 3:45 p.m., Hopkins said the home was still on fire and firefighters were using a tall ladder truck to spray water on top of the house.

According to Routt County Assessor’s Office records, the 2,302-square-foot home on 6.2 acres is owned by Samuel and Sharon Taliaferro. Hopkins said the home was in the process of being sold and a goodbye party for the Taliaferros was scheduled for next week.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from several miles away on Colorado Highway 131.
