Bill Marolt: Kudos to Steamboat
December 30, 2009
Steamboat Springs — There's a very special feeling for our athletes every time we visit Steamboat Springs for a major event. During the Olympic Trials for freestyle and Nordic combined last week, it was more clear than ever why Steamboat is truly Ski Town USA. From the huge crowds to the hospitality and the fact that it was Steamboat's hometown heroes challenging for titles made this a very memorable week.
In just over a month, our U.S. athletes will be Vancouver bound. They've gone all out in their preparation to be best in the world. A great part of the success of our team comes from communities like Steamboat Springs and what they do to help young athletes. It's no coincidence that three world champions — all with Steamboat roots — were battling for the win at the rodeo grounds. And it's no coincidence that Steamboat moguls skiers were strong contenders on Voo Doo.
It's because this community cares! That's the true spirit of the Olympics. You provide an amazing opportunity for young men and women to pursue their dreams.
On behalf of all of us at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and the U.S. Olympic Committee, thank you, Steamboat, for producing such an exciting Olympic Trials and for all you do to provide opportunities for youths.
President and CEO, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association
