Bike Week features races, polo and more

It is a celebration of bikes all this week in Steamboat Springs.

Bike Town USA, the local initiative that is striving to make Steamboat a must-ride cycling destination, is kicking off its annual Bike Week at 10 a.m. Monday with a factory tour of Steamboat titanium bike manufacturer Moots.

"There is something every day this week, and I hope people enjoy biking Steamboat," Bike Town USA director Amy Stern said.

Other events range from Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare's women's group mountain bike ride at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday to the bike polo tournament from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Yampa Street.

Also Saturday, at about 12:45 p.m. at the Main Street Steamboat Farmers Market, local cycling advocates will recognize the latest multi-use trail built on Buffalo Pass using lodging tax dollars.

The trail is a one-mile loop on U.S. Forest Service land.

"I've seen it," Stern said. "It's beautiful. It's got a scenic, 360-degree panoramic view at the top."

The new trails being built will need to be maintained, and the Trail Maintenance Endowment Fund has been established by the Yampa Valley Community Foundation to pay for the maintenance.

The Steamboat CycleArt event will raise money for both Bike Town USA and the endowment fund.

"CycleArt is one of the highlights of Bike Week," Stern said.

CycleArt is an auction featuring cycling-inspired pieces of art, including photos, oil paintings and sculptures.

"You name it," Stern said. "Every type of art is represented. There is really something for everyone there."

The artwork can run from anywhere from $20 to thousands of dollars.

"It really runs the spectrum," Stern said.

CycleArt starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Deport Art Center.

Tickets at the door are $55 and $45 in advance when purchased at steamboatbiketown.com/CycleArt.
