Big run can’t lift Soroco girls hoops to victory
December 6, 2013
Steamboat Springs — Sure, it was sandwiched between two stretches of dominant basketball at the hands of Meeker, and yes, those runs defined the game, a 56-38 loss for Soroco against Meeker, host of the Cowboy Shoot-Out, on Friday night.
An incredible 19-0 run in the middle of the game kept things interesting into the fourth quarter, however, and after the game, that's where Rams' coach David Bruner was focused.
"They fought and played hard," Bruner said. "That really showed a lot about them."
Soroco was led by Briana Peterson, who had 13 points. Jacey Schlegel added nine.
The Rams trailed 30-8 midway through the second quarter but scored seven unanswered to finish the first half. Then, early in the third quarter, they added 12 more, all from 3-point shots, and all on consecutive possessions. Peterson and Schlegel each had one, as did DaKota Bruner and Jessica Rossi. In that span, Meeker only got one shot off.
"We were able to hold them on the defensive end and we got in our offensive rhythm," David Bruner said. "When we pulled within three, it got pretty quiet in that gym."

The game was still within five at the end of the third quarter, but Meeker ran away in the fourth, racking up the big final gap. Still, Bruner said his team — playing without several of its top players — could take plenty from the experience.
The squad is back in action at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Rangely.
"The girls gave a great effort," Bruner said. "Hopefully, they'll do that again” today.
