Big BMX race set for Saturday in Steamboat
July 9, 2014
BMX racing is going to get kicked up a notch this weekend in Steamboat Springs.
The Steamboat Springs BMX track will play host to a state qualifier race Saturday.
Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and stretch until 12:30 p.m. with racing set to start at about 1:30 p.m.
Track co-director Gina Grether said she's expecting a day packed with top-tier racing.
"I've getting emails every 10 minutes, people from Denver and all over the state," she said.
The object of desire for all those racers are points toward the state championship, set for August in Grand Junction. Steamboat's event is an opportunity for those riders to rack up much-needed points and crawl up the standings.
The event will cost $20 for racers, and the field — potentially around 200 riders — will be divided into various age classifications.
The crew at the track hosts weekly races that Grether have been drawing about 30 athletes each week and she's expecting about the same for Thursday night's weekly event.
This weekend is different, however, and the crew at the track is preparing.
"We've been working hard for about two weeks straight to get the track in shape," she said. "We have toughened up the surface, made sure the track is smooth and weed free and put a lot of water on it so it's not dusty and dry. We're preparing areas for spectators."
Registration will be available at the track Saturday and more information is available at http://www.usabmx.com/tracks/1855 or by calling Steamboat Springs BMX at 970-871-9500 or emailing at steamboatspringsBMX@rocketmail.com.
