Best of the Boat: Best Mountain Bike Trail — Flash of Gold

Even though the Best of the Boat voting ended before autumn had a chance to turn Flash of Gold's ocean of aspen trees into a sea of gold, the newest addition to Steamboat's mountain biking scene rode away as town's Best Mountain Bike Trail.

The reason: its gentle gradient, meandering switchbacks and flowy track through one of the largest aspen groves in the county.

"It's a great addition to the trail system on Buff Pass and should help reduce bike use and conflicts with motorists on the road," says U.S Forest Service recreation specialist Kent Foster.

Built with voter-approved proceeds from town's accommodations tax, the 5.2-mile trail gains 1,000 feet of elevation and leads from the top of Spring Creek Trail near Dry Lake Campground to the top of the first major switchback on Buff Pass Road and the start of the BTR trail. A fork to the right continues upward across Spring Creek higher up Buff Pass. It's one of the most heralded additions to Buff Pass riding in years.

"It's beautiful and features sweeping views as well as woodsy sections with amazing light effects," says former Bike Town USA director Amy Stern. "It's a great addition to Steamboat's mountain biking options."
