Basalt no match for Steamboat volleyball

Ben Ingersoll

— Steamboat Springs High School volleyball made quick work of its opening opponent in the Moffat County tournament Friday night, coasting to a 2-0 victory against Basalt.

The Sailors opened with a 25-17 win and followed with a 25-5 demolishing of the Longhorns in the rally score contest.

Coach Wendy Hall was pleased with the Sailors' ball control and ability to clean up what she considered a sloppy first game. Hall and the volleyball squad may have coasted to an easy win in the second game, but the Steamboat coach is gearing up for some stiffer competition during Saturday's matches.

"They're feeling good," Hall said about her team. "We just hope we continue to improve, and hopefully we get tested tomorrow. That's what we need in the preseason."

Steamboat will open Saturday with a 9:15 a.m. game against Cedaredge. The Sailors then will take on Olathe at 1:15 p.m. and Moffat County at 5 p.m. Hall said she anticipates a tough match against Olathe after watching the Pirates play Friday.

The Sailors already have beaten Moffat County this season.
