Band strives to be larger than life
March 3, 2005
The members of the Nocturnal Tomatoes are all closet KISS fans, and they model their live show after the band that taught music audiences the meaning of “larger than life.”
They’ve been known to wear KISS makeup, and they’ve been known to wear eyeliner, but it’s not just about costumes.
“We feed off the crowd,” keyboard player Matt Martinez said. “We’re passionate about what we do.” Nocturnal Tomatoes come on stage along with a laser light show, video backdrop and fog machine. “We made it into a rock show.”
The four member Colorado Springs band has played here twice already this winter, and Martinez says that both times they came to town (once in November and once in January), they brought with them a snowstorm. Watch the skies this weekend.
The band has been together about three years. The name is a holdover from a previous member’s previous band. No one knows its origins or its meaning, they just know they like it.
The band plays a few originals, but they mostly stick to the covers because that’s what people like to hear.
Their list includes Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Eric Clapton and, of course, some KISS.
