AprÃs Ski Way to close as redevelopment continues

Kristi Mohrbacher

— Construction of a roundabout at Mount Werner Circle and AprÃs Ski Way is 30 percent complete and should be finished by Sept. 15, project coordinator Joe Kracum said Thursday.

“Things are good, which in construction is always a good thing,” said Kracum, who is leading the ongoing urban redevelopment projects at the base of Steamboat Ski Area.

Kracum said although material underneath the roadway was “sub-grade” and needed to be replaced, the unexpected delay “won’t postpone the finish date or greatly affect the cost of the project.”

The next phase of the project will require the closure of AprÃs Ski Way between Mount Werner Circle and Village Drive, from Monday through June 27. The section of road will be closed 24 hours a day until work is completed on the roundabout.

According to a news release from Steamboat Springs city officials, traffic needing to access AprÃs Ski Way east of Village Drive will need to use Village Drive from Walton Creek Road. Project flaggers will redirect vehicles headed up Mount Werner Circle to Eagle Ridge Drive.

Steamboat Springs Transit service will detour around the closure. Buses will not serve some stops at the Gondola base, Burgess Creek Road and Steamboat Boulevard. Jonathan Flint, operations manager for Steamboat Springs Transit, said there will be a temporary stop on Village Drive at AprÃs Ski Way and another next to the parking lot on Pine Grove Road.

This summer, crews will work to finish the roundabout and entrances. The project includes new sidewalks along Mount Werner Circle and additional crosswalks at the high-traffic area. Bike lanes with ramps to the sidewalk will allow cyclists to avoid traffic in the roundabout.

A public open house is scheduled for Tuesday to update the community and the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority on current progress at the base area, along with upcoming plans and the next bond issue. On the agenda are proposals from the development community regarding Ski Time Square and possibilities for redesigning the area.

“It’s all very preliminary, but they’ll be showing us their ideas about commercial space, food and beverage, connections to the promenade and things like that,” Kracum said.

Jane Blackstone, development manager with The Atira Group, highlighted the importance of key areas at the base. “Having Ski Time Square Drive remain in its current alignment with a great streetscape and good circulation is very important,” she said.

Upcoming projects depend on the amount of funding received in the next bond issue.

“We’ll have a better idea in July about what kind of funding we should receive,” Kracum said, “and from there, we’ll spend the next two months prioritizing projects.”

The list of projects to tackle includes redesigning the promenade, daylighting Burgess Creek and various pedestrian and mobility issues.

“We’re looking ahead to the next five years,” Kracum said.
