All Arts Festival in Steamboat offers new attractions, new location

In this photo, culinary artist and Chef Olivier begins to make a sugar sculpture from scratch using his own recipe and method of applying heat to create the figures at the Creative Mixology event at the 2015 All Arts Festival.

Multidisciplinary spectacles, ingenuity and natural beauty will mingle freely as the Steamboat Springs Arts Council presents the 2017 All Arts Festival for the third year.

Not only will the festival encompass the visual arts, it will engage all of the senses with music, literary and performance arts in partnership with Opera Steamboat, Strings Music Festival, Piknik Theatre and the Steamboat Art Museum.

Festivities commence Friday with the Fine Art Stroll from noon to 5 p.m. at the All Arts Festival's new location at 10th Street and Lincoln Avenue. The Stroll will continue from 10 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

"Each artist is completely different from the next," said Tim Zandee, organizer and main judge for the juried show. "It's smaller so you have a chance to spend more time viewing the art and visiting with the artists."

Focused on fine art rather than fine craft, 30 artists were selected based on quality in each medium for the juried Stroll, Zandee said. Traveling as far as New York, Georgia, Texas and Hawaii, 90 percent of the artists are new to the All Arts Festival.

"This is where you find one-of-a-kind pieces," said Barb King, Steamboat Springs Arts Council’s special events and marketing coordinator.

Although the event was on Yampa Street in year's past, organizers believe the new venue will bring higher visibility and a more intimate setting to the Stroll.

The show is also being held in conjunction with the Steamboat Wine Festival with offerings like the Corks & Canvas workshop featuring live music, a guided painting, a light lunch and wine pairing.

Aside from the Stroll, the All Arts Fest will also include Creative Mixology, a creative happy hour event, from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Art Café Tent.

Combining all mediums into a mix, the event will feature Mack Stephens on the saxophone, author Ann Ross sharing a few choice words, Meg Southcott inspiring the audience with mesmerizing dance, Sarah White-Crane offering a serenade and the Steamboat Theatrical Society presenting the finale.

Also new to this year's All Arts Festival will be the Art Café, which will stand as the center of all the weekend's culinary concoctions by Chef Charles Fleischman with a breakfast and lunch menu including his lamb popsicles, lobster rolls and more. Drinks from Steamboat Springs Coffee & Tea Co. and Storm Peak Brewing Co will also be available.

Tickets for the Creative Mixology are $30 and can be purchased at the Depot or on-line at steamboatarts.org.
