Aging Well: Walking for fitness, fun and challenge

Walking classes

Walk for Fitness

Focuses on improving participants’ aerobic condition and overall strength and tension relief. This ongoing class is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays and meets at the Steamboat Springs Community Center for walks on the Yampa River Core Trail. Arthritis Foundation Exercise follows at 10:30 a.m. at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Walking leader is Gena Fischer.

There is no charge for the class but donations are appreciated. Join any time; registration is not necessary. Call 970-871-7676.

Walk for Fun

For walkers interested in pacing their walks from slow to fast or joining a guided walk on the Core Trail. Participants will learn how to monitor their exercise intensity. Bring a water bottle and friend.

This ongoing class is from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and meets at Bud Werner Memorial Library’s parking lot entrance.

Walking leader is Carol Baily. There is no charge for the class but donations are appreciated. Join any time; registration is not necessary. Call 970-871-7676.

Pole Walking

This class is for experienced walkers looking for a challenge. Routes include hills and uneven surfaces. Participants bring their own walking poles, or they can purchase them through leader Marti Irish.

The class is from 7:45 to 9 a.m. Mondays, starting today and ending July 5. The class meets at Howelsen Hill stables. The cost is $25. To register, call 970-871-7676 (registration may be done after the first class today).

Craig walking group

Colorado Northwestern Community College offers an ongoing walking class for older adults, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in Craig.

The class meets on the north side of the Craig Cemetery and is free to participants 62 and older.
