On June 6 and 7, the Colorado Department of Revenue Liquor & Tobacco Enforcement checked 34 bars and restaurants and 14 businesses that sell packaged liquor.

Steamboat Springs Police Department Capt. Jerry Stabile said it probably was one of the biggest compliance checks that have been done in the area.

“All of the sudden we get an email saying everybody passed,” Stabile said. “Pretty encouraging.”

The recent checks were done without the knowledge of local police, who Stabile said do checks about three times each year.

The compliance checks involve using someone younger than 21 years old, who works with authorities to attempt to buy alcohol. Stabile said that if the underage person is carded, the underage person is told to say they do not have identification.

Stabile credits the success of the most recent compliance checks to police and the state being vigilant with doing the checks. He also credited business owners, who take alcohol sales seriously.

“When they did not pass, it’s a big deal and you could tell it was a big deal for them,” Stabile said. “I truly believe our people want to do the right thing.”

Stabile said business owners take pride in passing the checks, and it is about more than not getting fined or having their liquor license suspended.

Penalties get more severe for repeat offenses. Sometimes instead of having their liquor license suspended, businesses are offered the option of paying a fine of 20 percent of the alcohol revenues from the period of the proposed suspension.

Recreational marijuana businesses also are subject to compliance checks. Stabile said there have not been any compliance checks yet, but they would start doing them soon.
