3 days of tennis wrap up in Steamboat Springs
January 31, 2011
Steamboat Springs — It wasn't just that Corbin Diehl won the boys advanced division Sunday as action wrapped up in the Mixed Doubles and Junior Championships at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs.
A fixture on last fall's high school varsity tennis team, Diehl said it was the way he won and how he won that had him excited.
He beat Nick Mathews in a two-set match, but one that was a lot closer than the match the pair fought through last time they met. Diehl said that's good news for his high school team, and it's good news for him.
"He's a great player. I have really high hopes for him on the high school team," Diehl said. "His game has really come along.
"I had a really good weekend. This season's been a lot of fun."
A busy weekend at the Tennis Center came to a close Sunday as champions were named.
Diehl won twice on the three-day event's final day, also beating Quinn Cain, 6-2, 6-2, to win the boys advanced title.
Charlie Smith won twice, pulling out a tiebreaker to beat Hayden Snyder, 6-1, 5-7, 10-5, to win the intermediate-advanced division.
Tamara Katthain beat Shealie Jenkins on Sunday, 6-3, 6-4, and won the girls advanced division. Kira Lorenzen, meanwhile, won twice, against Brook Metzler, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, and Shea Burger, 6-0, 6-0, to take the girls intermediate-advanced title.
Lorenzen was one of several players to rack up more than one championship.
Snyder and Katthain paired up to win the mixed 6.5 doubles division, while Louis Nijsten and Elizabeth Speare took the mixed 9.0 doubles championship.
David Lorenzen won the mixed 8.5 doubles with Patrice Lorenzen, then won again, joining his daughter, Kira Lorenzen, as each added their second titles by winning the mixed 7.5 doubles.
"It was a ton of fun to play with my daughter," David Lorenzen said. "She's really coming into her own. She's starting to have faith in her game and confidence in herself."
