3 car crashes close Rabbit Ears Pass for 3 hours Friday morning
April 12, 2013
Steamboat Springs — U.S. Highway 40 at Rabbit Ears Pass was closed for three hours Friday morning because of three car crashes in less than a quarter mile stemming from poor road conditions.
A total of six vehicles were involved, but no injuries were reported, according to Colorado State Patrol trooper Matthew Normandin.
The first crash occurred when a car lost control, went across the highway, hit a guardrail and swerved back across the highway before rolling over, Normandin said.
A three-car crash was caused by those who were slowing to avoid the rollover.
Normandin said a semitrailer was trying to make it up the icy pass when it came to a stop and was rear-ended by another car.
Normandin said no one was cited because the conditions were extremely slick.
Closing the road allowed for the cars involved in the crashes to be cleared and the Colorado Department of Transportation to put sand down.
