Sailors survive Summit scare

Joel Reichenberger

— It was as long night with constant delays in the action and breathtakingly close sets on top of that, so the Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team was happy that, when action finally wrapped up Thursday night playing on the road at Summit, the Sailors had emerged with a victory.

Steamboat won, 14-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-23.

“It was a very difficult night, and we were super excited to get out with a win,” coach Wendy Hall said. “It was very difficult to get any rhythm going, but to our kids’ credit, they managed to stay focused and get the job done.”

Hall said Summit played as well as she’s seen it play in recent years, and Thursday, that squad, in front of a loud home crowd, did its best to topple the Western Slope hierarchy.

Steamboat struggled again with its blocking, while Summit was strong defensively.

“We had to find other ways to beat them,” Hall said.

The Sailors, 11-2, are back in action playing at 1 p.m. today at home against Rifle. The Bears, 1-10, have struggled so far this season.

“It’s a better Rifle team than we’ve seen in the last couple of years, and any time we’re playing, we’d better pay attention and play our brand of volleyball,” Hall said. “You can’t take a day off — otherwise, you’ll be disappointed, either in the outcome or the performance. We have pretty high standards for both right now.”
