Girls lacrosse drops its first two

— It was a rough start to the season for the Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team but not as bad as it looked, according to coach Betsy Frick.

The Sailors opened with a 19-0 loss Friday night to Fruita-Monument, then fell 15-2 Saturday against Grand Junction.

Frick said her team played well, however, and things got out of hand later in both contests.
Frick said the squad has five varsity players who saw their first high school lacrosse action this weekend, as many rookies as the team has juniors and seniors combined.

Summer Dorr made 16 saves in net for Steamboat while Brittney Starks and Kaelyn Kauffmann each scored for the Sailors while Cassett Yeager had an assist.

The team is back on the road next week with a trio of away games, starting Thursday in Eagle Valley. Steamboat then travels south to play Telluride Friday and Durango Saturday.
