Soroco boys deflate Hayden

Joel Reichenberger

— It was senior night for the Hayden High School boys team, but the Tigers couldn’t pull out the kind of emotional performance that sometimes summons.

Soroco romped over its rival, 57-36. Combined with a West Grand loss Friday night against Vail Christian, the win locks the Rams into second place in the league.

“That means a lot,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said of his team’s league finish. “We’d like to be first, but we’re where we’re at. We made our way through the last part of the league schedule really strong.”

A huge second-quarter surge gave the Rams the gap they needed. Ahead 16-7 after the first quarter, Soroco poured it on in the second. The team hit four 3-point shots, and Carl Rossi scored 12 of his game-high 19 points.

The Rams scored 22 points to Hayden’s nine in the second quarter, and by the time halftime hit, the game was essentially over.

Warren Hayes scored 18 points; Eric Logan added 15.

The Tigers did play better in the second half, and by game’s end, the lead had only grown by a single point.

Kole Miner had a big game, scoring 14 points. Thomas Rauch had 10, and Carlos Valdez hit three 3-point shots for nine.

“We didn’t match their intensity in the first half,” Hayden coach Jody Harvey said. “In the second half, we did, but in the first half, we let them take control, and we let them enforce their will.”

Soroco, 13-5 and 8-2, plays Thursday at home against Rangely. It, too, has already earned its way into the regional tournament, where it will head after the district tournament later this month.

Hayden, 2-15 and 2-7, travels today to play De Beque, then will have a shot in the district tournament the next week.
