David Moss: Obama’s firestorm

As has been widely reported, President Barack Obama made some very controversial remarks during his speech at the National Pray Breakfast. He indicated that Christians “should not get on their high horse” as Christianity has been used as a basis for justification of “terrible deeds” throughout history including the Crusades and the Inquisition and, more recently in the United States, slavery and Jim Crow laws.

I will leave it to others to parse the details of these examples but would like to address the President’s motivation for what, I am sure, he knew would ignite a firestorm.

In my view, the President used this approach for three reasons.

First, he used this to show his disdain for people, particularly Christians, with deeply held beliefs who are trying to improve the society based upon their beliefs.

Secondly, I believe he used this approach to distract from his unwillingness to seriously address the rapidly growing, widespread problem of Islamic extremism best demonstrated by the self-proclaimed Islamic State video of the Jordanian pilot being burned alive and many other horrific deeds throughout the Middle East.

Finally, I don’t think he was serious with his remarks and, as occurred in the aside during the State of Union address, he decided to demonstrate he was president and could say anything that he wanted.
