Diana Simon: Race may not be worth it

I agree with your concern about the value of the USA Pro Challenge biking races.

I was excited to have them come to Steamboat again. Last year, I watched them come by at Walton Creek and U.S. Highway 40. This year, I thought about going to watch the finish downtown, but had difficulty with the traffic and all the people.

In fact, I stayed home from my exercise class because I thought I could watch the race on TV. I didn’t want to spend so much time on Oak Street going across town to the community center.

My Aging Well exercise class is extremely important to me because of my disabilities and aging. I need to continually do some sort of movement. I used to have a mountain bike and now have an adult tricycle with power assist. Imagine my surprise when I couldn’t find the race on TV.

I thought Steamboat’s reason to have the Pro Challenge was for advertisement and attraction of people. Reading about the gifts of free rooms and lack of advertising value reinforces my concern about Steamboat continuing to welcome the Pro Challenge biking races every year for a brief time of excitement for a small group of people who battle the traffic.
